The roots of the                                               Wildlife Action Group International ......

In 1994 the Wildlife Action Group was founded in Malawi / Africa by Susanne Kneissl and Georg Kloeble to act on the obvious fast dwindling wildlife populations and the fact that there was no NGO which could convince Government with facts and figures about the seriousness of the degradation of Malawi's flora and fauna. With Malawian friends and supporters, even in high Government circles, slowly changes became visible.

In cooperation with the Malawi Department of Forestry, the Wildlife Action Group Malawi initiated 1996  the  Ecosystem Rehabilitation Project of the 19 000 hectare Thuma Forest Reserve, which is  today probably the best protected Forest Reserve in Malawi. With this and other projects in Malawi, the Wildlife Action Group could proof that the organization not just criticizes but actively and professionally contributes to the conservation efforts of a developing country.

After visiting WAG-Malawi, Heike Meier and Werner Fricke from Germany founded WAG-Support e.V. in Germany which supported the projects in Malawi financially but also by organizing volunteers to work in Malawi.

All Wildlife Action Group personnel worked without payment and voluntarily; only the scouts and workers received salaries.

Wildlife Action Group Malawi established an wildlife orphanage and reintroduced animals from zoos and other in captivity raised and held wildlife successful back in their natural habitats.

The impressive success of the Wildlife Action Group was only possible due to the closed cooperation with and the support of the local people in the villages.

Income generating activities like the Hippo Sanctuary or a 15 km electric elephant fence to protect the fields of the smallholder farms as well as creating employment in various sectors in the projects brought benefits to the local communities, which they highly appreciated.

In the early 2003 Susanne Kneissl and Georg Kloeble left Africa. But the problems of the people and nature in developing countries never let them go.

In 2007 they founded together with Martin Mühlnickel the WILDLIFE ACTION GROUP INTERNATIONAL .
